My Promise

I was introduced to disability at a young age when my father ruptured the L5/S1 disc in his back in 2003. Growing up, I rarely ever saw disability represented in TV. The only disabled character I recall from childhood was Dr. House, and we all know he wasn't the best rep for the disability community. Now I'm an adult, wishing we'd had more and better representation when I was growing up. Maybe more people would have been familiar with hEDS and would've realized that I should not be able to stretch the way I do.In fantasy growing up, I noticed disability was either swept under the table, ignored, cured, or in some cases used as a plot point. In my writing, I will never ignore or cure a disability, nor will I sweep it under the rub or use it as a plot point. My disabled characters will always be people first, and I will not sugarcoat the truth of being disabled. I will talk about the good days as well as the bad.
